In recent years, with its growing economy, China’s level of influence in the international arena has been steadily on the rise; yet domestically, the level of protection of human rights and personal freedoms has been plummeting. On 9th July three years ago, the Chinese government initiated the “709 Crackdown”, which unfolded in widespread detentions and arrests of human rights lawyers. To date, more than 320 human rights lawyers and defenders have been subjected to measures such as residential surveillance, house arrest, restricted travelling, inhuman treatment and even torture. The “709 Crackdown” has resulted in more human rights lawyers and family members forced in exile. Chinese human rights lawyers abroad may seem free from the shackles of the suppression policies, but how do they deal with their imprisoning sense of guilt? And family members who painfully fled their homes, how are they coping now? Through their words, the documentary 709 The Other Shore manifests their enduring willpower. No matter within or without, human rights defenders are all gazing out at the other shore, awaiting the dawn of a world of justice.
